1. Nigeria denies link between election and sacking judge

Nigeria's government has denied suggestions that suspending the country's top judge on corruption charges was connected to the presidential election - which is happening in three weeks.

President Muhammadu Buhari replaced Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen on Friday.

He is facing charges for allegedly failing to declare his personal assets before taking office in 2017, which he denies.

2. US charges Huawei in technology theft, sanctions violations

The US Justice Department on Monday unveiled sweeping charges against Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei in two cases likely to ratchet up tensions between the two superpowers -- including that of a top executive arrested in Canada on a US warrant.

The department unveiled 13 charges against Huawei Technologies, its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou -- the daughter of the company's founder who is currently out on bail in Canada -- and two affiliates related to violating US sanctions on Iran.

3. Trump to meet Chinese vice premier in trade talks

US President Donald Trump will meet with China's trade envoy this week during talks aimed at resolving the trade dispute with Beijing, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Monday.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He is leading a delegation of 30 officials to Washington for talks Wednesday and Thursday as the pressure mounts on both sides to reach a deal.

4.Pope says priest celibacy not 'optional'

Pope Francis said Monday celibacy for priests was a "gift to the Church" and not "optional", nixing the prospect of married men being ordained.

"Personally I think that celibacy is a gift to the Church," the pope told journalists aboard his plane returning to the Vatican from Panama.
